The 24-year-old is proving that she can hold her own on the Billboard Hot 100 by occupying the first two spots with her singles “Fancy” and “Problem,” respectively, and beating out big names like DJ Snake and Lil Jon, Jason Derulo and Pharrell. But what makes Azalea stand out from her counterparts is her ability to keep herself grounded.
Growing up in a small town in Australia, Azalea worked from a young age cleaning hotels and holiday houses and saving money to move to the U.S., which she did on her own at 16. She never let those challenges stop her from achieving her dream of being a rapper. In her songs it’s apparent that she worked for everything she has and took a bold leap of faith to get to where she is today.
Her song “Work” is a perfect representative of her journey. She admits that it hasn’t been easy—she had to make a lot of sacrifices to reach her dreams. She’s a role model for people who have no idea where to start. She had everything going against her: no family, hardly any money and very little support.
Azalea’s music is an example for men and women everywhere that if you work hard, you can excel and be successful in whatever they strive to do. She hasn’t forgotten where she comes from because she often alludes to her home country, but she doesn’t dwell on the past—she keeps looking forward.
Iggy Azalea has nothing to prove to anyone, but that’s not going to stop her from continuing to do what she does best. Big things are happening for Azalea, and the world is waiting to see what she’ll do next.
